There are many general aviation aircraft companies that harken back to the earliest days of single engine aviation history. The Aeronca aircraft finds its roots in the Aeronautical Corporation of America, which was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Lunken Field. The Aeronautical Corporation of America was one of the first U.S. companies to produce and manufacture a light single engine aircraft.
In 1928, the Aeronautical Corporation of America produced the first Aeronca aircraft, the C-2. The C-2 was hailed as one of the first single engine aircraft to open the general aviation market to hobbyists and private pilots. In 1941, the small company changed its marketing façade and moved to Middletown, Ohio (just 45 minutes north of Lunken) and officially changed its name to Aeronca.
As World War II spun up, Aeronca played an important role in the Army Air Corp with its militarized single engine aircraft, such as the Grasshopper. The Aeronca aircraft company also produced trainers and gliders, which paved the way for other training-centric companies such as Piper.
After the war ended, Aeronca continued production of the Champ, Chief, Defender and Arrow aircraft that attracted many new hobbyist pilots to general aviation. Over 55 models were produced over 23 years, making Aeronca one of the most prolific single engine aircraft producers in the world.
Today, enthusiasts continue to enjoy Aeronca hobby clubs and annual fly-ins in Middletown, Ohio. Aeronca continues to be a major player in the aerospace industry, providing more than just single engine aircraft today. Aeronca plays an important role in aerothermoelastic and thermal research, much of which paved the way for the Apollo spacecraft and eventual Shuttle program.
