Buying Aeronca Champ That Is For Sale.

In the general aviation industry, a popular debate is the difference between the Aeronca Champ and the Piper Cub. Many pilots who love their Champ aircraft hate the Cub, and vice versa. Before you buy either, consider flying both since they each offer a unique flying experience not found in other single engine aircraft.

The Aeronca Champ is hailed as having much better ergonomics than the Piper Cub. In the Cub, it’s harder to reach the carb heat control and the trim control is more difficult to control. In the Aeronca Champ, everything is closer and visibility is much better. The only downside in the Aeronca Champ is the looser gear, which is susceptible to leaks and requires a careful eye. This is especially important if you have a heavier engine in your Champ, very common in today’s market.

When you perform your pre-purchase inspection of a prospective Champ aircraft, always check for certain items that are known as vulnerabilities on this specific aircraft. First and foremost, check the gear for leaking. Most Champs have some gear leakage, but avoid buying one with a large leak. Next, check the wing struts for corrosion and tailwheel springs and wheel tightness. Always check the wing attachment fittings for corrosion, an unfortunate vulnerability in all older aircraft.

Many Aeronca aircraft on the market require a great deal of work to become airworthy. A well-maintained Aeronca Champ will run around $40000, a small price to pay for such a nice historical single engine aircraft that comes with quite a bit of power for its age.
