Why You Should Consider Buying A Commander Aircraft

In July 2009, Commander Premier Aircraft Corporation (CPAC) announced that Aero-Base Inc of Montreal, Canada would be purchasing CPAC to revitalize the once popular general aviation aircraft and keep replacement parts available. In accordance with the sale, Aero-Base Inc would continue the base of operations of CPAC in Cape Girardeau Regional Airport and seek to revitalize the Commander-series aircraft design and production.

Many non-aviation experts may look at this event as the dissolution of a proud company that unsuccessfully survived the aviation financial crisis of the late 2000s. On the contrary, in 2005, CPAC was formed in response to a stifled production line of the Commander aircraft by a group of 50 Commander aircraft enthusiasts and owners after the original parent company (Command Premier Aircraft) went bankrupt.

CPAC’s mission from 2005 to its sale in 2009 was to find new investors who could restore and revitalize the Commander-series production line. After four years of debt negotiation and searching, Aero-Base Inc finally agreed to keep the production and part-line alive.

The sale of CPAC to Aero-Base Inc marks the first positive step of the Commander-series aircraft in a decade. In the early 2000s, the Commander 115 and Commander 115TC enjoyed little success in the general aviation market.

After production of around 200 aircraft, Command Premier Aircraft was lost to bankruptcy and the Command Owner’s Group (COG) of enthusiasts and owners purchased the remaining Commander assets. Renamed to CPAC, the owner’s group has been searching for a new owner since.

Though the production line of the Commander-series aircraft hasn’t re-launched, the purchase of CPAC has allowed Commander owners to enjoy continued parts availability and enthusiast’s involvement. The Commander aircraft enjoys a smaller hobbyists market, but one that’s robust and close-knit. For new Commander owners, the appeal of this group is an attractive incentive for ownership.
