The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States has come up with different “classes” that define various performance specifications of aircraft. One of these classes is defined as “light sport aircraft”.
A lot of single engine aircraft and propeller driven aircraft fall into the light sport aircraft class of plane. The trademark of the light sport aircraft is the fact that these aircraft are easy to fly and simple to operate. As such, they are the easiest to train on for single engine pilot licenses and also one of the most inexpensive categories of general aviation aircraft.
For an airplane to fall into the light sport aircraft category, it must have certain performance specifications. First, the aircraft cannot weight more than 1320 pounds gross and the cabin must be unpressurized. Accordingly, most light sport aircraft cannot fly above 15000 to 20000 feet.
Next, the maximum speed in level flight must be no more than 120 knots or 138 miles per hour at cruise altitude. Next, the aircraft must have a fixed or ground adjustable propeller. The adjustment of the propeller can save fuel for maximum engine efficiency.
There’s also a maximum stall speed for light sport aircraft. The stall speed must be no more than 45 knots or 51 miles per hour. Also, the light sport aircraft only carries one extra passenger, if any at all. A trainer that’s a light sport aircraft will always have two-seat capacity. Finally, the light sport aircraft always has a single reciprocating engine. These simple performance specifications make the single engine general aviation aircraft a very fine choice as a first airplane purchase.
