Mooney aircraft performance has a long history of proven performance, excellent customer service and forward-thinking aeronautical engineering design. The early Mooney models were no exception to fine performance standards. In fact, much of the early Mooney design features last to this day as the golden standard for powerhouse single engine aircraft.
The first truly high-powered Mooney aircraft was the Mooney M20E. The M20E gave birth to the M20F, which is known as the predecessor to almost every Mooney model flying today.
The M20F was created by modifying the M20E with a longer fuselage, an extra fuselage window, increased airframe strength and a higher-powered engine. As an after-market edition, the Mooney M20F also has a turbocharge feature that adds 5-10 KTAS to the overall performance specifications.
The stretched body of the M20F and the extra fuselage window is very attractive to private pilots looking for a fast transport aircraft. In fact, the extra cabin room and window also gave rise to another M20F model, the “Executive 21”.
The superior engine of the Mooney M20F delivers around 200 horsepower of performance and a very short takeoff runway requirement. For pilots on a space budget, the M20F is sometimes the only aircraft they can fly out of their personal strip!
The M20F is designed for VFR as it possesses the non-standard avionics display that modern pilots generally do not like. Some models are available with aftermarket upgrades, but expect to pay an extra $30,000 to $50,000 for this convenience. Also, some early M20Fs still have non-electrical landing gear, but these are becoming less common as older models are upgraded.
