When the aeronautical industry began having financial difficulties in the late 1990s, Mooney aircraft became a higher end product that many pilot consumers could no longer afford.
For almost three decades, original models of Mooney M20J and M20K flooded the market without a matched consumer market. As a result of decreased profit, Mooney disbanded production on these two classic models and created a more efficient production, the M20S Eagle.
Many general aviation pilots have dubbed the M20S Eagle a “mini” Mooney Ovation. Priced for much less, this aircraft provides a great level of performance for a much lower price tag. In today’s general aviation market, many pilots will find this very attractive as they search for a used M20S Eagle.
The Eagle can carry a payload of about 500 pounds with a full tank of gas and comes packed with about four hours of flight on a full tank. While the payload options aren’t as diverse as they are on the “long body” Mooney models (such as the Ovation or Bravo), this small aircraft delivers performance for a fraction of the price of the large models.
In today’s competitive used market, this airplane will cost around $300,000 with basic avionics, GPS and standard comfort items.
To some pilots this cost will still be fairly high, but when you buy a Mooney, you’re buying the sports car of the general aviation industry. The initial cost is high, but the Mooney brand is designed to last decades and delivers continuously unmatched speed performance throughout the years.
