The Mooney aircraft brand is known for a nearly 60-year history in the general aviation market founded on speed and excellent performance. One of the first models ever built by Mooney was the M20B. In fact, the M20B was the first all-metal Mooney model after the all-wooden aircraft frame, the M20A.
Produced starting in 1961, M20B saw only 223 airframes ever sold to the public. As a consumer, buying a Mooney M20B is buying a piece of general aviation history.
One of the biggest drawbacks of the M20B that demanded its quick evolution to the M20C was its extremely limited rudder control. This made crosswind flying extremely difficult. Also, the M20B was extremely heavy for its size and had reduced safety features (the seat belts were bolted to the floor). Also, the original flap operation system within the M20B was based on a mechanical system that could be very hard to operate.
The M20B never saw the upgrade to T-shaped avionics, which most pilots will find easier to fly with during IFR flights.
An advantage of the M20B is its very low fuel use, at only around 8 gallons per hour. A well maintained M20B is not just a flying hobby aircraft, it’s a piece of Mooney history and can be found for around $40,000.
Depending on the engine overhaul schedule, many of the M20Bs will require more frequent overhauls at around 1200 to 1400 flight hours. Despite this, Mooney enthusiasts love to own this performance aircraft for such a low price.
Perfect for the experienced Mooney pilot, the M20B is a great aircraft to own and operate.
