The early Mooney models in the general aviation industry often have a love-hate relationship with pilots of today.
In the early 1960s, the Mooney M20C was produced as a follow-up to the first all-metal Mooney model, the M20B. Over the decades the Mooney design has evolved quite a bit from the classic M20C model. This isn’t to say this model had a huge impact on general aviation history!
Owning a M20C is akin to owning a classic car.The M20C comes standard with the performance powerhouse Lycoming 180 horsepower engine. Some models today come with upgraded turbocharged features that allow 5-10 KTAS improvement over the older M20Cs.
This aircraft also comes standard with a traditional Mooney avionics set, which most pilots quickly replace with a more common T-shaped avionics set. Buying a Mooney that already has these upgrade will raise the price of your aircraft, but adds overall value in the long run.
The M20C is designed for four passengers, but remember that this aircraft is centered on performance- not cabin comfort. Most full sized adults would not be comfortable in this aircraft with three other adults.
The fuselage of this single engine aircraft is one of the shortest in the industry. This poses the advantage of a shorter takeoff requirement but a much smaller cabin. Also, the aerodynamic handling of the M20C is criticized for being too inefficient, but this goes hand in hand with owning a piece of aviation history.
A used model will run anywhere from $60,000 to over $100,000 depending on aftermarket upgrades.
