In the early 1960s, Mooney met consumer demand for high performance single engine aircraft by producing the Mooney M20E series. By the late 1960s, the M20E had undergone several iterations, one of the most successful being the M20E Chaparral variant.
Produced in 1969, the Chaparral carries a 200 horsepower Lycoming 360-A1A engine, a shortened fuselage and all-electric gear flaps. Earlier M20Es were often criticized for trying to be the “one stop shop” aircraft that could combine both power and four-passenger seating.
Any pilot who’s ever flown in a M20E can attest to the fact that this single engine aircraft is not optimized for four passengers! Mooney finally conceded that the M20E would not be marketed as payload-centric aircraft in their 1969 M20E Chaparral. With an even shorter fuselage, the Chaparral delivers unmatched performance and one of the shortest takeoff runway requirements in the general aviation industry.
Mooney also improved the overall handling of the M20E with the Chaparral version. The one-piece windshield compliment to the Chaparral enhances the overall aerodynamic performance of the M20E by decreasing drag across the surface of the aircraft.
These small improvements in windshield slope and cowling design continued to later Mooney models such as the M20F and M20G.
Today’s Mooney Chaparral aircraft will often feature a turbocharged engine and more standard T-shaped avionics suite. This is highly valued, especially in new pilots still training on IFR. The Mooney brand continues to last decades and offer reliable performance standards not found anywhere else in the hobby.
Pilots old and new will appreciate the historical value of the Mooney M20E Chaparral.
