The first Mooney models shocked and awed the general aviation industry in the 1960s when they were first introduced to private pilots. The first truly high performance Mooney was the M20E.
Throughout the subsequent decades, the M20E’s design gave rise to another generation of longer fuselage Mooney aircraft, the M20G series, also known as the “Statesman”.
The Mooney M20G was produced between 1968 to 1970 as a response to consumer desire for more horsepower. The M20G was originally given a 180 horsepower engine. In today’s Mooney used aircraft market, most M20Gs will have an aftermarket 200 horsepower engine that delivers even greater power and performance.
A unique addition to the 20G series was the newly standard electrically operated landing gear and flaps. In this series of Mooney aircraft, electrical landing gear was an option. If you find a Mooney with an old-fashioned Johnson bar to retract landing gear, you’re truly finding a piece of aviation history.
The Mooney M20G is considered one of the older Mooney models, so while you won’t get the turbocharged performance of M20M and beyond, you will definitely own a true piece of general aviation history.
A drawback of the M20G is its difficult IFR flying avionics design. It lacks the traditional “T-shaped” avionics design that is standard in Mooney aircraft produced from the early 1970s onward. Many new pilots will find this aircraft challenging to fly, as a result. Older and more experienced Mooney pilots (and general aviation enthusiasts) will enjoy this older design as part of the historical Mooney flying experience.
