The Navion aircraft is truly a piece of American history. Produced by the North American Aviation company, the Navion was released starting in 1948 as a response to an anticipated post-war aviation boom. Designed under the same auspices as the P-51 Mustang, the Navion was marketed as a reliable and powerful single engine four-seater.
Post-war, the Navion brought several advancements to the general aviation industry. Many single engine aircraft of the time featured fabric covered wings and wooden features. The Navion advanced the idea that a proper single engine aircraft should have aluminum sheeting attached to an aluminum frame. This lightened the aircraft and increased the durability.
Today, Navion aircraft are still flown by a small group of specialized hobbyists. The Navion aircraft was built so well that many models continued airworthiness is only to be expected. In 2003, Sierra Hotel Aero purchased the certificate to produce the Navion and one day, a resurgence of new Navion-models is to be expected in the industry. Since the Navion aircraft was designed so long ago, no two are alike and many feature extra certifications and add-on modifications. The Navion produces between 185 to 205 horsepower in flight and has a standard cruise speed of around 155 miles per hour.
The Navion aircraft can also be converted to a two-engine model known as the Camair Twin Navion. With such specialized history, if you can find a Navion on the market, you’re sure to find a unique story behind it and lots of customization. Many owners find this enticing about the Navion. A Navion aircraft is a sure welcome to any aerospace collection, historical or operational.
