Buying A Used Piper Cherokee 140 The Right Way.

Piper began production on the Cherokee line of aircraft in the 60s, releasing many variants on the line. After the introduction of the Cherokee 150, the Cherokee 160, the Cherokee 180, and the powerful Cherokee 235, Piper introduced the Cherokee 140 trainer in 1964.

This bottom end two-seater, despite quickly being upgraded to a 150 hp engine, kept the 140 name – a source of confusion for many enthusiasts.

In 1971, Piper released a variant on the Cherokee 140 called the Cherokee Cruiser 2+2. This variant was mostly a four-seater (though there were versions that featured two seats) and maintained the 140 designation despite carrying a 150 hp engine. In 1974, Piper shortened the name to simply Cruiser. In 1977, Piper discontinued production on the Cruiser altogether.

Despite the cessation of production, the Cherokee 140 and its many variants can still be found on airfields across the country. Though often set aside as a trainer in favor of newer models, enthusiasts still enjoy flying this classic craft or simply collect it out of nostalgia.

The pilot community generally regards Cherokee 140s as sturdy little planes that are great for quick trips, though they often suffer from cramped quarters and a lack of storage space. They are dependable and affordable, despite their age, and are easily found for sale across the country. Cherokee 140s, overall, are considered tough and durable and they handle well. Many pilots have gotten their start on a Cherokee 140 variant and so therefore many of them will speak fondly of this plane’s virtues..
