Piper began producing the Cherokee line of airplanes in the 1960s, releasing many variations in the line. The Cherokee 150 debuted in 1961, and the Cherokee 160 debuted that same year as a more powerful alternative to the 150. This plane was similar to many of Piper’s aircraft of the time: single-door, unpressurized, all-metal, single engine piston-powered planes with a tricycle landing gear and low-mounted wings.
Throughout the early to mid-60s, Piper released many variations on the Cherokee theme, including the Cherokee 180 and the Cherokee 235 four-seaters, along with a Cherokee 140 trainer (which was actually powered by a 150 hp engine in most models). What this meant to the 150 and the 160, the middle-of-the-road models, was that they were not powerful and roomy enough to be considered alongside the 180 and 235 and were not as affordable as the 140. So their sales suffered as a result.
It came as no surprise then, when in 1967 Piper debuted their modern new 180 Cherokee Arrow line and discontinued the Cherokee 160, along with the 150. Despite the termination of production, the Cherokee 160 can still be found on airfields all over the world. Some still use it as a trainer or for short jaunts because of its maintained reliability over the years. Still others collect these planes out of sheer nostalgia.
The airplane enthusiast community generally regards the Cherokee 160 as a sturdy plane that is ideal for quick trips and training. They are reliable and reasonably priced despite their age, and they are often found for sale online.
