New Or Used Piper Cherokee 180 For Sale

In the early 1960s, Piper began producing the Cherokee line of airplanes, releasing a number of variations in this successful line. The Cherokee 180 debuted in 1962, following the two initial models of the Cherokee line: the 150 and the 160.

The Cherokee 180 was similar to the previous two aircraft in that it was an all-metal, unpressurized plane that featured a single door, a piston-powered single engine, a tricycle landing gear, and low-mounted wings.

It was made better, however, by the addition of additional power that made it easier to fly with passengers in all four seats and the fact that in 1968 it had an additional window added on (giving it a more modern look) and its cockpit was modified to feature levers instead of old push-pull style controls.

A few years later, Piper released the Cherokee 235, a powerful, top-of-the-line four-seater. Despite this, the 180 managed to survive as a good, middle-of-the-road craft that many pilots and enthusiasts could actually afford.

In the early 70s, Piper began renaming their many planes to make them more modern sounding and to give them more personality. The Cherokee 180’s new name in 1971 was the Cherokee Challenger. In addition to the new name, the 180 was given a longer fuselage and wider wings. A scant three years later, the Challenger was renamed the Archer.

The Archer line continues to be produced and Piper is currently producing the Archer III. It is a very popular line. Despite this, the Cherokee 180s of the old guard are still popular on the used airplane market, markedly so.
