If you are into small planes, whether you are a pilot or merely an enthusiast, you have heard of the Cherokee Six. The Cherokee Six is a plane that is found in every small airport all over the planet and as such its popularity and reliability is unquestioned.
In 1961, Piper’s Cherokee airplanes debuted. They released the 140 trainer, the 150, the 160, the 180, and the 235. While Cherokee line was successful, people wanted more luxury.
So Piper debuted the Cherokee 260 in 1965. This craft was similar to other Cherokee models in that it was a single-engine, unpressurized, all-metal plane that featured low-mounted wings and a fixed landing gear.
But that was where the similarities stopped. Everyone considered the 260 to be better in every way than previous models because of its six seats (though some had seven) and its baggage compartment that it had in its nose resting between the engine and the cockpit. It also featured a double door in its rear, which made it easier to load passengers and cargo. The Cherokee Six, so named because of the number of seats, was a success.
Despite the success, change was coming. Many pilots found that the 260 was just not powerful enough to comfortably carry full fuel tanks, six passengers, and baggage. So it was fitted with a 300 hp engine and christened the Cherokee 300. This plane eventually became the Lance, followed by the Saratoga. Production of the Cherokee 300 stopped in 2007, but they remain very popular.
