The Piper Tomahawk. 

 

In the 1970s, the general aviation industry was drastically changing with the deregulation of the air transport market and continued financial cuts. Piper Aircraft sought to produce many different types of aircraft to suit a very broad consumer base. The Piper Tomahawk is Piper’s trademark two-place trainer, with special design features thrown in to enhance pilot training experience.
 
One of the biggest trademarks of the Tomahawk was its increased propensity to spin. This was actually intentional by Piper Aircraft! The Tomahawk was designed to spin more freely than comparable aircraft of the time such as the Cessna 150 or 152. Also, the Tomahawk was designed with tighter control restraint so that pilots had the sense of flying with a heavier aircraft.
 
By 1982, the Tomahawk production was stopped. Later models come with very nice features that add to the comfort of the cabin. Excellent features such as cabin heating and automatic defrosting make this plane perfect for more northern parts of the US. Also, the elevator system improved safety. The fuselage was designed with better soundproofing and more aerodynamic design that lends to improved thrust. Finally, the versatile landing gear allows the Tomahawk to land in even sand and rock!
 
This single engine aircraft should only be flown by experienced pilots or student pilots paired with a trainer. Since the aircraft is designed to spin more naturally, only pilots properly trained and equipped to deal with stalls and spins should fly this plane. In today’s market, this plane makes a great historical addition to any plane collection or traditional flight program.
