Piper Tri-Pacer.

Piper Airraft produced the Piper Tri-Pacer in the post-World War II period when general aviation exploded. Families in America could suddenly spend their extra cash on the aviation hobby, and new delivery companies sprung up like wildfire. Piper produced the Tri-Pacer between 1950 and 1964 as a very popular, four place high wing single engine aircraft.

When most pilots see a Tri-Pacer, they immediately think of reliability, space and speed. Engine options for the Tri-Pacer are limitless and on today’s general aviation market, you’re sure to find a huge variety of options. Originally installed with a 125 horsepower, today the modern pilot can find Tri-Pacers with 150 to 180 horsepower engines.

Like many other Piper aircraft, the Tri-Pacer also has the classic fabric finish. This means the aircraft has a steel fuselage, aluminum wing and fabric-covered structures. This light covering gives the Tri-Pacer a shorter takeoff distance and longer range with less gas. The Tri-Pacer can go around 430 miles on a tank of gas, and even comes with an optional “tail dragger” design made popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

For the beginning pilot, a Piper is the perfect addition to a historical collection or a hobbyist plane. The Tri-Pacers come standard with very basic avionics and are usually not upgraded since most remain pure trainers. The basic design and easy flying experience is perfect for pilots to hone their basic aeronautical skills and IFR flight. While some pilots prefer modern speed and electronics, many still prefer the historical relevance of the Piper Tri-Pacer and even the Piper Super Sub series.
