There are many items and options that go into an aircraft’s overall value. Some of these items cannot be easily quantified, such as the current economy and historical value of your aircraft. Whether you want to sell or buy, it’s important to understand the different variables that will make (or break) or airplane’s overall appraisal.
First and foremost, consider the engine operating hours of your airplane. If your aircraft is close to an engine overhaul, you simply aren’t going to get full price for your aircraft. Pilots know that every 2000 to 2500 hours, an engine will need $10,000 to $15,000 of work. If you’re close to an overhaul as a seller, it behooves you to perform an overhaul and demand a premium price.
Next, consider the market. Do you have a historical aircraft? Are you in an area with a high demand of single engine aircraft? What sort of after market upgrades are connected to your aircraft? Do you have a glass cockpit and upgraded avionics? New pilots who want the most modern equipment are asking many of these questions up front. More and more, older aircraft are being left in the hangar because the cost of new technology is decreasing- especially in electronics. Upgrading avionics or including a GPS unit can work marvels in your aircraft’s selling power.
Finally, consider the cosmetic appeal of your aircraft brand. Cessna aircraft and Pipers seem to be a dime a dozen on the market. They hold their retail value quite well, but don’t expect Mooney-sized offers for these aircraft. Also consider your customer base. If you have a Piper, you’ll probably sell to a student who doesn’t have the capital to spend full-price. Small realistic budgets can make the difference in whether or not your plane sells.
