In a general aviation industry where many early aircraft manufacturers are no longer around, Socata has defied the typical history of aviation companies. Socata traces its origins back to 1911 as one of the first aerospace pioneers in the general aviation industry. Today, Socata is partnered as Daher-Socata and continues to produce general aviation aircraft in support of the European, and some American, aviation market.
Socata stands for “Societe de Construction d'Avions de Tourisme et d'Affaires” ans was originaly founded by Morane-Saulnier. It was bought in 1966 by Sud Aviation and refocused its efforts to producing small aircraft. In 2000, EADS introduced Socata as a subsidiary wholly owned to produce aircraft. In 2009, Daher purchased 70% of Socata from EADS and business continues today. Today Daher-Socata is headquartered in Tarbes, France and they produce the Socata TBM.
Socata is one of the biggest general aviation pioneers in the industry. Over the years, they have produced over 17,000 planes in 94 different models. Around 5800 planes are still airworthy today and the TBM model continues to sell big in Europe in the French Air Force and in private companies.
Socata’s biggest contribution to early aviation was Morane-Saulnier’s commitment to the monoplane during a time when the biplane was hailed as the design of choice. In World War II, Socata was also the first aircraft to incorporate a gun that could fire between propeller movement, which honed the first true “fighter” aircraft in the world. Finally, Socata introduced the first sliding cockpit design that could support a fully enclosed canopy. Today, these inventions are seen everywhere in modern single engine aircraft design.
