In the American general aviation market of the 1980s and 1990s, small aircraft design focused mostly on two and four-seater aircraft with greater levels of horsepower and higher cruising speed. In Europe, the general aviation market demanded larger private airplanes with more seats and higher useful loads. Speed and power was important, but it took a back seat to functionality. The development timeline of Daher-Socata showcases this trend that differs drastically from the timelines seen in American companies.
In the early 1980s, an aviation industry recession drove a 5 percent drop in Socata sales. During this time, many American companies continued mass-producing airplanes, only to have them sit unsold in a warehouse later on. Socata took a different approach to recession. Socata produced aircraft with an “assembly on demand” policy. Customers would have to wait longer to receive their aircraft, but the company could stockpile parts and save labor costs down the road.
The late 1980s saw a Socata break into the American general aviation market. The company opened an American subsidiary called Aerospatiale General Aviation in Texas. By 1986, about 75 models were flown in the US and the new flux of growth led to the first developments of the TBM 700.
The TBM-series set a new standard for general aviation. No longer would private pilots be constrained to two and four-seater aircraft. Now, with Socata, pilots could purchase six and eight seater aircraft for a mere $1 million using new turboprop technology.
The TBM model would eventually shape the way Socata engineered and marketed its aircraft. To this day, the TBM model continues to be the cornerstone of Daher-Socata engineering and pilot comfort.
