From the 1990s onward, Socata found itself pushed out of the American market by product liability legislation that choked the general aviation industry. As a result, Socata changed its marketing to target small businesses and government. Socata design saw several changes that reflected this new primarily European market.
The TBM-700 was one of the earliest cornerstone aircraft of Socata design and paved the way for future Socata design. As Mooney abandoned the Socata TBM-700 plan, Socata continued to push production of the TBM-series as the new fuel-injected TBM 200 Tobago. Socata’s attractive features included a pressurized cabin, short take off ability and useful load of 6-8 passengers. For small companies needing aviation support, the TBM-series was a dream come true.
By the late 1990s, Socata had expanded to include composite engineering design and twin-engine general aviation aircraft manufacturing. The most widely known Socata twin-engine aircraft is the TB360 Tangara, produced in both America and Europe as a useful trainer. By the end of 1998, Socata was one of the most profitable small aviation aircraft producers in the world with a profit of nearly $35 million dollars worldwide.
In the past decade, Socata has been purchased by EADS and partnered with Daher to continue production of its widely popular aircraft. Today, the company in Europe is known as Daher-Socata and in America, the Socata Aircraft Company. The TBM 700 continues to be its most prolifically ordered aircraft around the world, serving as a staple transport utility aircraft for both military and private corporate users.
