Owning A Stinson Aircraft.

When general aviation enthusiasts think of a classic single engine aircraft in history, the Stinson aircraft comes to mind. Produced between 1920 and 1950, the Stinson “look” pervaded early single engine aircraft design and many early features of this historical piece continue to influence aerospace design today.

Edward Stinson in Dayton, Ohio founded Stinson Aircraft in 1920. Stinson began his lifelong aviation career as a stunt pilot. By 1926, he had earned enough money to begin his own aircraft company, and before long, he moved to Detroit, Michigan where his aviation pursuits were community-supported.

The Stinson Aircraft Corporation has the distinction of being one of the few aircraft companies to survive the Depression of the 1930s. In fact, Stinson was producing six models at this time, a record for any aircraft company. Perhaps the most popular Stinson design is the Stinson Model “O”, a cherry red single engine aircraft that was sold to several different countries’ militaries. Pre-war Stinson Model 105 was also very popular, with over 535 models sold.

During World War II, like many general aviation companies, Stinson continued to produce aircraft in support of the Army Air Corps. Immediately post-war, the Stinson 108 was sold in competition with Cessna and Piper. Several other aviation companies absorbed the Stinson brand by 1950. Most notably, the Piper brand used the Stinson design as the basis for the Piper Apache.

Stinson aircraft on the market today are sold as historical pieces. Most will not be airworthy, but they provide a wonderful view into the earliest general aviation designs. Stinson is a great addition to any historical aviation collection.
