Cessna 177 Cardinal

The "Forgotten" Cessna Might Be Your Best Bet...

Most aircraft buyers have never even considered the Cessna 177 as a potential airplane to buy. The 177 was designed around 1965 with the purpose of being the next generation 172. But it did not turn out that way... Not even close!

Right from the design stages it had a considerable amount of problems that made it worse the the 172. In fact, it is probably easier to talk about what didn't go wrong with this model the what actually went wrong.

As far as the design errors, the engineers stuck a smaller four cylinder engine in the aircraft, the landing gear created more drag then it should of, the counterbalance was out of balance causing it to be unbalanced in the air. There is a long list of design problems that your local mechanic can fill you in on if you are thinking of buying one.

On the good side - it is a very nice aircraft to look at, it goes fairly fast - the performance specifications are as follows - 120 knot cruise speed and a range of about 625 miles.

The 177 also has a retractable landing gear (177 RG) which makes it go a bit faster as there is less drag. Also, the doors are a lot larger then the ones on the 172 and that makes it easier to get into!

Bottom line - this is a great aircraft that is still very in demand as far as people wanting to buy it. There are very few for sale and when they do go on sale they are picked up pretty quickly.
