This Classic Skywagon Might Just Fit Your Needs...
The Cessna 185 Skywagon is a classic tail dragger that still has not gone out of style and is very much in demand. It first came off the assembly line in 1961 and remained in production until 1985. Over 4,000 of these tail draggers were brought to market over that time frame.
The 185 is without a doubt Cessna's workhorse. It is a stretched out 180 with the option to have six seats. As well, it has a 300 hp engine that gives it a cruise speed over 155 knots. Those are pretty good performance specifications for a big old tail dragger!
It is widly used as a spray plane, a float charter plane & a bush plane. Because of its high horsepower, you have a lot of options vs the 180 with 65 or so less. Most times the back four seats are taken out to make more room for cargo space... Similar to a cargo van!
Of course there are a few reasons NOT to own this aircraft. It does have a very large engine that can suck a lot of fuel. And if you don't need that extra horsepower vs what the 180 offers, you'd best stick with the 180 or move up to a 206 as it is a little better for the price. Also, it is a tail dragger still... There is nothing wrong with that IF you like them. But they are very much an aquired taste and you need to know how to fly them. You also must be prepared to pay a few extra dollars for insurance.
Bottom line is -- This is a GREAT aircraft "if" you can justify it and want the tail dragger. It has about 45% more usable load then the 180 and is A LOT bigger inside. It is a Cessna classic and will probably hold its value over time as they are not making any more of them.
