Is Piper's First Twin Engine Worth A Second Look?
The Piper Apache begain life in 1952 as a twin engine four seater. It was definatly on the cutting edge as far as small aircraft go. This twin engine was a hot rod in the sky... But this 150 hp twin wasn't enough for the buyers. Pilots started getting used to this aircraft and wanted more.
So by 1959 Piper came to market with an even better Apache, so good they renamed it and called it the Aztec! This new Aztec had a 250 hp engine and later came out with 6 seats, fuel enjection & a turbo charged version
Piper was going head to head with the now classic Beech Baron. Although this Aztec is defeinatly not a Baron, it still is a very capable aircraft and can hold it's own.
As far as performance specifications go, the Aztec has a very respectable range of about 1,000 nm & a cruise speed of about 170 knots (roughly). It is not a jet but it does go fast and has a very nice range. It is actually know for its space and cargo hauling capasity.
You know this is a good and stable aircraft if the U.S Navy started to use them in the early 60s. It is reported that they bought and customized 20 Aztec airplanes.
Before you go and buy one, your going to want to make sure you don't buy one that the engines are timed out on & the airframe has high time. It'll cost you a small fortune to rebuild 2 of these 250 hp engines.
