Why This Piper Work Horse Is Still Popular...
The Pawnee is Pipers agricultural work-horse. I am almost certain that you have probably seen one of these funny looking airplanes flying around the fields near your city during the late spring crop spraying season. Some cities also use them for spraying for summer bugs.
So what is this airplane all about? Piper started rolling these airplanes off the assembly line in 1959 and kept them in production un till 1982.
As far as performance specifications go, their are four different models - the base Pawnee (150 hp), the "B" (235 hp), "C" (260 hp) & "D" (260 hp). As far as cruise speeds go - your not going to see much above the 100 kts mark on these. They are specifically designed for working and a large load capacity.
They do have about a 1,700 lb useable load, so you have plenty of room for fuel & spray or whatever your hauling.
The newer models do have a jump seat but for the most part they are designed to be a single seat aircraft. So they are not much use for anything but spraying & pulling gliders around.
Why in the world would you buy one then? Good question! Unless you plan on using one to get into the spraying business, you might consider buying one to fix it up and then sell it to pilots who are in the air spray business...
