Do These Three Compare To The Cessna 172?
The Warrior, Dakota & Archer are three of the most popular Piper aircraft ever built. Pretty much every airport in America has at least one of these tied down to the tarmac somewhere...
But the question is - Do they live up to the hype? And do they compare to the time tested Cessna 172?
The Archer came about in 1971 and was pretty much a remake of the original Cherokee 140 but with a longer
fuselage.
The Warrior was released in 1974 and it was an Archer but with 10 extra hp on the engine & the longer fuselage.
The Dakota came to life in 1977 and was the same thing as the Cherokee 235 with some minor updates. It had 235 horsepower.
So really, these three aircraft are just re-releases of Pipers 1960's aircraft just with some new names and a few modest updates.
It was a pretty good marketing strategy for Piper as these aircraft sold and still sell in great quantities to this day. The only one that did not sell very well was the Turbo Dakota - 200 hp turbo charged fixed gear aircraft. That was released in 1977 and never made it past the first year of production. It didn't make sense to own one when you could own an Arrow and get the retractable gear.
Again, these are great aircraft and yes they do compare with the Cessna 172 as far as performance specifications go... BUT you have to ask yourself - do you really want the low wing aircraft vs the high wing? That is the choice you have to make! If you like the low wing - the one of the above three aircraft might just be what you need.
